Silvercore Podcast 172 Jesse Reardon Fishing With Dad

===

[00:00:00] Travis Bader: This one is a really unique and really fun episode of the Silver Corp podcast. You might remember Jesse Reardon from Silver Core Podcast, episode 93. Jesse was Jim Shockey's, longtime cameraman. He's a very talented videographer. He's an avid outdoors man, and in that podcast he mentioned to me that he was thinking about starting his own show.

The Fishing With Dad Show. Something where he would travel around Canada and he'd fish with other people and hear their stories and he'd be there with his son and it would be a bonding experience with him and his son and learning about different cultures and different ways of fishing, and he would share that with his audience.

I thought it was a fantastic idea. I highly encourage him to do it. Next thing [00:01:00] I learn, Jesse sold his house and he's gone all in on the Fishing With Dad show. That took a lot of courage. That's not something most people do. That's exciting and it's scary, and that's what we're talking about today. Jesse invited me over to the island to go fishing with him.

Friend of mine, Dave, he's got an airplane here in Ladner. He offered to fly me over to the island and made for one heck of an adventure. I loaded all of my gear into my na No backpack. I've got my special Na Nook podcasting case that I take with me. You'll hear me talk about that in the beginning of this podcast, and you might start thinking, man, Travis must be getting paid to talk about Na Nook, and I'm here to tell you that I'm not.

I like their kit. It works very well, it's robust and Silver Court Club members get a 30% off discount on all Nina gear. Just go into the Silver Court Club portal@silvercourt.ca. There's short thoughts or episodes or interviews that I have with interesting people, and it's designed to help Silver Core Club members achieve more, both in the outdoors as well as in life.

Finally, I should mention that if you want to get the most outta this episode, I'd highly encourage watching it on YouTube or on Spotify. And while you're there, it would help this podcast a lot. If you left a review on Spotify or on Apple Podcasts and you took a screenshot of that review, email it into info@silvercore.ca along with your mailing address, and I'll send you some [00:03:00] Silver Core stickers as a thank you.

Now without further ado, let's get on with this episode. Got a couple of GoPros, extended battery life on them. Just, uh, plug in here to these battery packs made by refuel. Got a DJI mic for backup. It's 32 bit float. We'll just clip those on and record. And then I got a Zoom F six field recorder, and that's, again, 32 bit float.

The whole thing goes into this amazing, the no, nine 10. I love this case. You can see it's been through hell and back and everything on the inside. Is brand new. I put a couple of voided the warranty I'm sure, but I put a, uh, what is that? A XLR input and a, uh, a 3.5 millimeter, uh, audio jack in there. So when we're ready, we close it up, we could submerge this thing in water and we can have a conversation.

[00:03:49] Jesse Reardon: All right. Alright.

[00:03:52] Travis Bader: Peter Piper, Peter

[00:03:53] Jesse Reardon: Pop popsicles. Ice, ice, ice skills test. Testicles. Testicles, popsicles, and popsicles. [00:04:00]

[00:04:00] Travis Bader: Oh, alright.

[00:04:04] Jesse Reardon: This thing on, what's the boat? What's the boat called? Honestly, it's called I, we haven't named this boat 'cause what the hell? You got me out in a bug. You haven't named it yet. It's actually Jack's, Jack's boat. Um, so it's a long story with the boat. Do you have bananas on it as well? I don't, okay. Um, yeah.

Hope story, uh, no, no name for the boat. I call it Double Eagle 16 five.

[00:04:27] Travis Bader: Okay, because it's a double Eagle 65.

[00:04:30] Jesse Reardon: Yeah. And it was, uh, Jack's boat. He's, uh, Jenny smoke shack's son.

[00:04:34] Travis Bader: Got it. That's why he is got Jenny Smoke shack sticker in the back here. Yeah.

[00:04:38] Jesse Reardon: He's a young, up and coming guide. Um, and his dad, Spencer guy does that smoked salmon sockeye, um, Jenny Smoke shack.

Really good. Kind of a cool story. And he is actually got two boys, uh, Nick as well. They wanna be fishing guides. So, so what I'm

[00:04:52] Travis Bader: doing right now is, I'm just trying to find the best way to drive this where we're not getting wind in our mic, which is at our back. Yeah. And we're not going into the wind, which is [00:05:00] giving us chop.

Yeah, you're doing great. We're gonna, uh, we're gonna see how this translates into audio and I'm sure we'll hear back from the, the audience if it's, uh, not listenable. So, uh, he said, Trav, come on over. I'm doing this fishing with. Fishing with Dad show,

[00:05:13] Jesse Reardon: so I, I named it the Fishing with Dad show. Yeah. That's what I've kind of committed to in a sense.

But, you know, yeah. I signed with Wild tv. I actually signed with Wild TV this week.

[00:05:22] Travis Bader: How, how do you feel about that?

[00:05:24] Jesse Reardon: Well, super nervous. Yeah, because a lot of reasons, but, um. When it gets real and you gotta start asking sponsors for, for money to kind of support this kind of, almost, in a sense, passion project.

[00:05:34] Travis Bader: Hmm.

[00:05:35] Jesse Reardon: It's just something I feel like people need to see. 'cause it's kind of, it's uh, I don't know. We love the outdoors. We love fishing. We love family. We love learning from our mentors or older ones that generally taught us how to. Mine didn't teach me so good, but you know, they encouraged me to get out here.

It was more shock that got me into the outdoor thing, but it was this, it was, this is more, well, your dad got you out fishing. Oh yeah. He got me out fishing. But it was always like, they were fishing, but it was like good old [00:06:00] boys fishing. Like, it was just like, sure. Yeah. But like not

[00:06:03] Travis Bader: real hardcore, like what we're doing today.

Right.

[00:06:06] Jesse Reardon: I'm still, that's the problem. Like I, and honestly, it's like time to get out fishing like once. I thought when I had kids, I'd just get my kids out fishing. I got my 14 foot lu, I'm married now. I got kids and we're going fishing. But I'm like, man, there's a lot involved to get out fishing, catch fish, and do it.

Right. And anyways, that's why I want to film these guys and get the, you know, learn their tricks and also, uh, you know, hear their stories. Right.

[00:06:30] Travis Bader: So when you first told me about the Fishing with Dad show mm-hmm. And I could see how passionate you were about it. And I encourage you, I'm like, yeah, you know what?

Sell the house. Follow your dream. Right? And I don't think I was alone. Probably other people were encouraging you to do the same thing. But I think that's a dream that a lot of people have. I think a lot of people have an idea of something they'd love to do, if not for, if not for, uh, my current work position, if not [00:07:00] for the kids, if not for.

And there's always reasons why. They shouldn't do it.

[00:07:05] Jesse Reardon: Yeah, I got a lot of reasons why I probably shouldn't, but I, there's a ton of reasons why, more reasons why I should just pursue it and see what happens. Right. You can only sabotage so many things in your life. Right. And

[00:07:17] Travis Bader: yeah. Talk to me about that

[00:07:18] Jesse Reardon: when it looks like it's gonna get hard, you know, when it, when you're there and you can like, you know, it happened even when I was a kid, like trying out for uh, AA or AAA hockey and it was like, no, I'm done.

And I like, just quit hockey. 'cause I was like right there where I could have kind of taken the next step. I just said, no, this is too much. And I kind of turned and got the skateboard and snowboarding. I could see it happening and I was like, that's gonna like, ah, but what if, you know? And then I sabotaged.

So same with this show, because there's a lot of involved. It's just trying to get you out filming today and, and also pretend to be a guide, which I'm not.

[00:07:53] Travis Bader: I can attest to that. Yeah, you can attest to that. That's good.

[00:07:55] Jesse Reardon: I just like fishing. And you

[00:07:58] Travis Bader: and I are in the same boat

[00:07:58] Jesse Reardon: there. Yeah. Like I just [00:08:00] like trying to get out.

[00:08:00] Travis Bader: Really. You are talking about taking people out in the boat. You, the concept of mentors, people taking you, teaching how to fish, introducing you to the outdoors. Some people don't have those mentors. I can see that really resonating with people who don't have the mentors would love to have that. And they can learn something from the show.

They can learn something from the experience. They can see different people come on out and fish or. Or do whatever outdoors. Yeah. I I think that's cool. Some people do have mentors and it's gonna strike that nostalgic chord. Mm-hmm. But if every time you're going out, you got a different guess and a different person.

Uh, the one thing that struck me is that the one constant in there is the one thing that you seem to be shying away from the most, and that's you. Yeah. Yeah. You are the one constant to the show, and you've got this incredible story of selling your house to chase your dream. Something that so many people.

Have thought about or dream about. And so few people actually go out and do. And I think that's [00:09:00] the story. And all these people that come through that you can talk with and you can experience things so you can experience your story through them.

[00:09:09] Jesse Reardon: Yeah, no, I love it. I love it. But, um, I just, I shy away from being the guy.

Right. Like,

[00:09:14] Travis Bader: okay, so you've gotten imposter syndrome?

[00:09:16] Jesse Reardon: I do, yeah. A little bit. Like I don't wanna be the guy like trying to showboat or trying to be like the influencer. 'cause the only thing I said, like I told you. The only thing I can influence is to get in shape and look into RO game as a sponsor

[00:09:30] Travis Bader: and

[00:09:30] Jesse Reardon: then maybe like get, see, I thought you

[00:09:31] Travis Bader: were referring to me when you said those two things.

No, that was me, man.

[00:09:34] Jesse Reardon: Like I'm 46 and I've had this vision since I was a kid, since I first came out here in Victoria as a like as a 12-year-old. And my dad and Dave Plummer took me out fishing and yeah, it got me hooked. Those are some good times with my dad. Those are some good times with my grandpa in Ontario used to.

Take me to the lake, um, Georgian Bay and Owen sound thornbury and just plant me at a rock. We'd just sit there and talk and give you where I'm a bobber and [00:10:00] a catch and release and keep the odd one. And

[00:10:02] Travis Bader: so two things come to mind. Uh, Dean Nugent was on the podcast with Jason Bud and Jason's A-A-C-M-G-I-M-F-G-A mountain guide.

He's, uh, right, switched on really good at what he does in the mountains. Em, he took Dean out. They're doing some rock climbing. Jason's on lead. He's setting a route, and Dean's bling at the bottom. Girl walks by and talks to Dean and says, oh, you're a rock climber, are you? He said, well, no, no, I'm not. Jason is points at the Rock.

And she looks at him and says, oh, well you've got a helmet and a harness on and it looks like you're belaying somebody. Um, are you heading up there after? Oh, yeah. So, sounds like you're a rock climber. I's like, huh? She's like, I've never climbed before. You're a rock climber. He's like, you know what? Okay.

Got it. Compared to Jason, I'm not a rock climber. Yeah. Compared to you. I'm a rock climber. Got it. So that's one thing that pops into mind when you're talking about, [00:11:00] well, you're not a guide, you're not a this, you're not a that compared to who. Right? Yeah. No, I mean,

[00:11:04] Jesse Reardon: yeah.

[00:11:05] Travis Bader: Okay. Second one that pops into mind.

Yeah. Sean Taylor, friend of mine, he's, uh, been on the podcast a few times. XJTF two, uh, joint Task Force two Canada's Elite Special Forces. It's like the SAS for R for the UK or Delta Force R for the us. JTF tour for Canada. Mm-hmm. And there I am sitting in his kitchen recording a podcast and wraps up. He tells me, Trav, I've, I've had such imposter syndrome sitting down here getting on the podcast.

I don't want to be all braggadocio. I don't want to be, uh, that guy.

[00:11:40] Jesse Reardon: Yeah. Okay.

[00:11:42] Travis Bader: So the best of the best tier one special forces fellow saying he's got. Yeah, he's got imposter syndrome and what is he talking about? He's just talking about his life and his experiences, so I think mm-hmm. If you don't have imposter [00:12:00] syndrome, you're not pushing yourself in the right way.

I think in order for you to grow, it's like a snake shedding its skin. Yeah. You're gonna put something new on, it's gonna feel different.

[00:12:12] Jesse Reardon: Yeah.

[00:12:12] Travis Bader: But it's still you.

[00:12:14] Jesse Reardon: Yeah, no, you're right. You're right. It does need a constant character of some sort. I've done a lot of groundwork. The big one is I got Lifetime on board new owners since 2023.

Awesome Guy Map oils, he bought it from, uh, the guys, the original owners, 1980. So he's running it and he's gonna build me a custom like fishing boat. And then I got, wow. Yeah, I know. That's crazy. And then with that, lifetimer Boats presents the fishing with ad show. So then I got Parker Marine, who's super interested as well.

Mm-hmm. And there's a wicked story right there, like the. The dad bought the company in the sixties, gave it to his son, and then his son gave it to his two boys who now run the Courtney and Nanaimo location. And then there's also Can Lure, which is the six like original Vancouver Island and Lure [00:13:00] companies.

There's six of them that are still around. I don't know all the years on them, but like Buzz bombs and stuff like that, they're on board. Mustang survivals on board, king Dolphin, props on board. So all these companies that are on board, I want to tell their story. I can see how to do it. But the business side.

And like getting things done with sponsors and like truly locking it in and like, 'cause there is costs involved. But there's also benefits 'cause you're supporting like a really cool project. So

[00:13:28] Travis Bader: winds are set to pick up a little bit. So I'm trying, I'm trying to get our, uh, speed up touch before we, uh, pick up these grab pots.

Yeah. So you've talked about. What could go wrong? Yeah, I've, I've heard you talk a lot about what could go wrong,

[00:13:45] Jesse Reardon: what could go right. Well, I tell some great stories. Um, I'm able to, uh, financially survive and not lose everything I own. And this is like a kind of a four year project. I'm 50 and see where I'm at with it.

And so see

[00:13:58] Travis Bader: if it works out means [00:14:00] what?

[00:14:00] Jesse Reardon: Well, if I get 20 shows done, they air, I mean, and I somehow like survive and takes a lot of work. It's a lot of work. You know, I, I know I could pull it off, but ideally I would, uh, work with a, a team.

[00:14:13] Travis Bader: You know, one thing that goes through my head, see if I could make it work.

It all depends on what you were, your metrics for success are. I, uh, was looking through a book. I was honored. I was asked to review a book that's, uh, gonna be willing to print soon. And, uh, I asked them what their metrics for success were on the book. And they said, honestly, we've already met our met. For success.

We've, we've made the book, it's, it's got value. Uh, if it helps one person, we feel awesome. So yeah. Point if, if 20 episodes is your metric for success, confident you can make 20 episodes.

[00:14:53] Jesse Reardon: Well, it's more than that. I think it's also like, uh. It's a reminder. 'cause a big part of this project is [00:15:00] to, uh, like when COVID happened, it really, really changed our world.

It also changed, you know, the world for our young, younger generation. Yes, fish became really normal. Like, I remember being a kid and hooking my first fish or, you know, a dozen fish as a kid. I, I can tell you each story and those are some highlights in my life as a child and usually. Yeah, usually someone I like really love was there to share with me, but technically we have responsibility as a parent and or adult with skills in the outdoor industry to share that, pass that down to our younger generation.

But as a kid like you, you gotta get out there and dry things. Get out there and do it, man. And, uh, get off the screens and, you know, I know there's an app for everything these days, but it's good to see kids light up. It's good to see people light up when they catch their first fish. It's like good [00:16:00] to see people, you know, unplug.

For a couple hours and just get sunburn, get some salt there. If this show reminds a dad or an older person to, you know what, maybe I should get the kid out this weekend and you know, take the lake or field camping, or maybe I should get my hunting license again. You know?

[00:16:22] Travis Bader: That's all part of it. Yeah, it was, uh, it's been an adventure.

It's been fun. But we're almost on the crab pots now. Yeah. Why don't we call this one a route? Totally. And, uh, I'm Jesse, I'm stoked to see, uh, fishing With Dad Show and I do appreciate

[00:16:34] Jesse Reardon: your supporting you come across and I just appreciate people who love the outdoors and. You know, they wanna pass it down and my goal is to tell those stories, so thanks, Jesse.
